Christmas Eve

For the second year in a row, we spent Christmas Eve at home in Kansas with my family, and we had a few extra days to spend on fun projects like reindeer food. Ava and Olivia mixed up a special snack that included oatmeal, granulated sugar and red and green sanding sugar (the “magic” ingredients to aid the reindeer in flight). Once their concoction was complete, they spread it throughout the yard.

Then, it was time for the girls to turn their attention to the big guy. Following a present opening with the grandparents, great grandparents and Katie and Tom, Ava and Olivia donned their new Christmas pajamas and set to work on letters to convince Santa they were indeed more good than bad.

Were they successful? You’ll have to wait and see!

Smith Family News

Ava and Olivia have been sharing some new news far and wide this month—we’re expecting baby number three to arrive in early July! The girls are VERY excited to be big sisters, though they admit hoping for yet another girl. (I’m quite sure this one is a boy, but I’ve thought that twice before…)

Aside from some exhaustion, my first trimester has been so good, I’ve been joking that this one is going to be my favorite. One thing’s for sure, though—we’ll have plenty of help once this baby arrives!

A chat with Santa

Ava and Olivia had the chance to visit with St. Nick this morning…

Olivia’s trepidation was slightly improved overĀ  the last face to face with the big guy.

Tooth fairy news

After a long, hard-fought battle to keep her third loose tooth securely intact in her lower gum, Ava FINALLY let Bryan help her pull it last night. Apparently, the last tooth extraction was a bit premature, and she was concerned this one would hurt as well. But, one quick yank, no tears, no blood and a few coins later, she’s sporting a new gap!

O Tannenbaum

Following the long Thanksgiving weekend, we visited a Prairie Elf Tree Farm south of town. It took us almost a week and a half to decorate the tree once it was up, but between the hayrack ride and the hot apple cider, we had a great time making the selection. It was a great way to kick of the Christmas season.

Santa Fix

This photo has been hanging at Doug and Karyl’s house for as long as I can remember. I have always loved it because the look on Jessica’s face is so sincere, and the embellished hat is such a sweet and perfect addition. Plus, it’s a rare Christmas decoration that’s up year round, so when I spy it in August, it provides a happy reminder of what’s to come.

Of course, over the last few years, I’ve found yet another reason to admire it. Wouldn’t you say that little girl could be Ava?

Ava’s Play Date

Ava hosted three of her friends for a play date last weekend. Two of the girls are longtime friends from preschool, and one is a new friend from first grade. It turns out the new friend knows the two old friends very well—a benefit of living in this small town!

Overheard

Ava: “Mom, if you got runned over by a car, and Dad was in Russia, who would pick us up from school?”

Bec: “What?! Why?”

Ava: “I just want to know. If you got runned over, and Dad was in Russia, WHO?”

Bec: “Well, I suppose Monica. Or Tom.”

Ava: “How would they know to pick us up?”

Bec: “I’d call and ask them to.”

Ava: “How EXACTLY would you do that? You’d be smooshed.”

Liv: “YEAH. You’d be SMOOSHED.”

Ava: “Your phone would be smooshed.”

Bec: “. . . I wouldn’t be that smooshed. I could still call. What exactly have you been watching on that iPad?”

Ava: “Mom. That’s what happens when you get runned over. You get smooshed.”

Bec: “I promise I won’t get runned over. I am very careful around cars.”

Ava: “But just in case, Monica or Tom, right?”
