Following the long Thanksgiving weekend, we visited a Prairie Elf Tree Farm south of town. It took us almost a week and a half to decorate the tree once it was up, but between the hayrack ride and the hot apple cider, we had a great time making the selection. It was a great way to kick of the Christmas season.

We have a similar tradition. I climb up into the crawl space, move painfully on my hands and knees until I reach the plastic tree, then hurl it onto the basement floor, piece by piece. I drag it upstairs in three passes, stand it upright and spend an hour trying to figure out how to get the damned lights to work. When it’s all done, there’s a deep satisfaction that, if I can get the branches re-bent into some semblance of a real tree, we might be able to limp through another Christmas. Traditions are what this season is all about.
