Ava, sharing news of her Wednesday night Girl Scout meeting via FaceTime: “And I got to bring home a guppy! And, IT’S PREGNANT. Pregnant guppies can have 2o to 200 babies!”

Me: “Wait…what? We’re going to have 200 fish? This seems like a significant oversight on someone’s part.”

Don’t worry. The momma fish usually eats all her babies, unless you give them some fake grass to hide in. Even then, she manages to eat the majority of them. You could potentially end up with 5 fish, if you’re lucky and they’re good at hiding. If you separate the momma from the baby fish, a few more might survive. A surprising number of guppy fish are weak and die of natural causes.

She did die, unfortunately. Three and a half weeks. Ava handled it well, until she realized Livie was legitimately devastated. Then there was some theatrical competition. Never a dull moment.

That is too bad 😦 Perhaps the next fish can be a male beta. They survive better for me.
