Keeping preschoolers busy
I recently mentioned to Ava that Dagny was almost nine years old. Ava askedĀ her birth date (April 1), then immediately suggested we throw her a birthday party. She remembered the Hello Kitty party hats from her third birthday (which, fortunately, were still stashed in the basement), and she suggested making a cake. We settled for cat food instead, but with a candle at Ava’s request.
Ava kicked off the festivities by wrapping a few presents she picked out for Dagny.

After signing Happy Birthday, she presented Dagny with her flaming dish. Dagny, having had her whiskers singed once before by a burning candle, kept her distance while Ava blew out the candle and opened the presents herself.

Dagny seemed slightly less aloof than usual, so I think that means she appreciated the effort. Perhaps it was just the treats, though.

Ava took this party very seriously. She did a great job–in fact, I think I’ll let her plan Liv’s second birthday this fall!

Overheard
Ava, upon the start of a lecture about honesty: “I really hope this is a short talk.”

Welcome, Linden!
My friend Liana welcomed a baby boy over the weekend. You can see photos over at Coca’s blog. In the meantime, I’m trying to convince myself not to drive north just yet…

Backyard business
We had a few new (or at least rare) visitors to the backyard birdfeeders this week.
Over the weekend, Bryan spotted a White Throated Sparrow and a Brown Headed Cowbird. Yesterday, we saw a Song Sparrow. We also have a number of Mourning Doves–far more than the single pair that usually hangs out under the pear tree.
It must be Josh’s suet!

Little Miss Helpful
Olivia helped me clean out my wallet this weekend. Wasn’t that thoughtful of her?

Rock Chalk
We took the girls to the WNIT championship game today to cheer on the Jayhawk women. Allen Fieldhouse at KU is an incredible place–small by some comparisons, but steeped in so much tradition that it’s palpable the moment you walk into the arena.

Olivia had a great time clapping along with the crowd.

Ava had a great time, too–she gave Baby Jay a high five and saw the govenor (she later told our friend Tom that Governor Sebelius is going to Washington to work with President Obama). She did find it to be a bit loud, though…

In all fairness, this is a decible rating you can see on the scoreboard here, so I see her point.

To make up for it, we took a trek down to the court to meet up with a special friend.

The Jayhawks didn’t win, but we had a great time nonetheless!

Overheard: Easter edition
Ava: Mom, what’s the Easter Bunny’s phone number?
Bec: I don’t know, why?
Ava: Because I need to call him and tell him we have lots of places to hide eggs.

Smith’s Mother
I was fortunate to be the subject of Ava’s art work this week. Now, if only I were lucky enough to have eyelashes like my sketchy counterpart…

By the way, that’s a dinosaur on my left there. Must be friendly, as I’m still smiling.
