This summer, I am spending a bit more time on an old hobby—storm watching. While I’m not barreling down the highway looking for trouble, I have found a few (literal) high points in town that provide a pretty good view of the summer’s storms.

Snow business
Five or six extra inches of snow last night, coupled with dangerously low wind chill temperatures, kept us at home today. This is the first time in four winters I’ve ever seen this much snow here. In fact, this may be more than we’ve had the last few years combined. I love it, and the girls, who are indulging in movies and popcorn all day, are pretty happy too.

Snowbound
I mentioned that we were snowed in at my grandparents’ for quite a few days. It wasn’t just the 18 inches of snow that was problematic, it was that the wind blew 40 miles an hour for three days, whipping up incredible drifts. We ventured out on Christmas Day to have a look.
It took Mom, Dave, Bryan and Katie six hours to dig us out.
For the record, if you’re going to be snowed in somewhere, Gramma’s is the place!

First snowfall of the season

When I posted this photo a few minutes ago, I hadn’t yet checked the forecast. I thought this was fleeting, but it sounds like we may end up with two to six inches of snow today! The nice thing about Kansas is that it will likely be gone tomorrow.

Snow?!
Did it really snow in Nebraska and Wisconsin today? Share your weather reports, please.
We woke up to temperatures in the low 30s this morning, perfect for an outdoor event for 70 at 9 am…
I am still defrosting, but at least there weren’t sidewalks to shovel. Soon enough, I’m sure.

Sunday storms
We left my mom’s house mid-afternoon on Sunday, and we found ourselves intersecting an impressive looking line of thunderstorms north of Salina.

We managed to slide between two small cells, avoiding all but a bit of rain.

We stopped for gas outside of Manhattan. Had we waited much longer before resuming the trip, we would have had to tangle with this one approaching from the southwest.
