Save the date!

Many months ago, Katie asked me to design her save the date cards. Or perhaps I offered. In any event, I tested her patience over the fall and into the winter, and then finally set to work shortly before Christmas.

We found the basic knot idea via a set of instructions provided by another bride online, then tweaked the layout to suit paper size and the design to match the tone Katie’s setting for her wedding in the country.

The real work came in the assembly–the 140 pieces needed to be printed, cut, scored, punched and tied. Thankfully, Mom and Gramma helped while they were here for the holidays.

Deck the halls. ALL the halls.

Seems the Tooth Fairy has been busy decorating–her door has a new wreath (and a liberal sprinkling of gold fairy dust). Olivia assures me there’s a tiny little Christmas tree inside.

Snow problem

The lack of snow in recent years is disappointing, especially for these Wisconsin transplants. I’m not saying I need to have five and a half months of winter, but a dusting here and there—and maybe even a couple of storms to accomodate sledding—would be much appreciated.

In the meantime, I’m taking matters into my own hands: I made a batch of homemade play snow–er, play dough–for the girls.  I followed this recipe, then added wintery peppermint extract and silver glitter.

He sees you when you’re sleeping…

Santa has long been one my very favorite things about the holidays, and sharing this tradition with my kids has been incredibly enjoyable.

When I was a kid, I vividly recall my mom telling me she spied Santa checking up on me–it was July, and he was peeking around the big red barn as she mowed the lawn. Then, close to Christmas one year, I found sleighbells in my stuffed animals: Mom supposed Santa dropped them while looking in on me one night.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Ava and Olivia found bells in their beds one morning in November–undoubtedly dropped from Santa’s accoutrement as he peered over them as they slept.

Disney, done.

One more Disney post–just to capture the best memories, like this one of Owen just before he took his first swim in the chilly hotel pool.

And, this one, wherein we discovered we could travel from our resort to the Magic Kingdom by ferry (which is far better than the Monorail, at least in my estimation).

Our hotel was right on the water, and a family of ducklings hung out on the ground below our balcony.

I changed our reservation at the last minute, requesting a room that overlooked the Magic Kingdom. We had the good fortune of seeing the nightly fireworks from our balcony, but Bryan had other plans and insisted we stay in the park for the show one night. It was late, and we were dead on our feet after 15 hours of walking. He was right, though; it was entirely worth it. When the fireworks were done, Ava said, “That’s the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen.” (Olivia promptly asserted, “Really? What about Owen?”)

We spent an afternoon in Epcot and enjoyed champagne in France, beer in Germany and wine in Italy. The girls had their faces painted and visited with St. Nick. That night, we attended an incredible Christmas concert that featured Neil Patrick Harris retelling the Christmas story (with the help of a huge orchestra and impressive choir).

Did I mention NPH? Oh, right. I think I did.

Admittedly, some memories are probably worth forgetting, like the utterly terrifying trip down Splash Mountain.

But the girls made some new friends…

Perhaps my favorite moment was seeing the girls play in this interactive fountain, and hearing Bryan say he remembered doing the same when he was a kid.

We really did have a fantastic time. Only four and a half years until the next fifth birthday!

Owen and Mom on vacation

There’s a bit of a theme to our vacation photos of Owen…

He didn’t sleep through the ENTIRE trip, though!

Things I say at least a dozen times a day

“Don’t do that to your sister.”

“Please stop stepping on my toes.”

“Put that in the closet/hamper.”

“That’s the third time I’ve asked you.”

“Please quit licking that.”

“I love you.”

“Knock it off right now!”

“Please be careful around your brother.”

“Could you walk like a normal person?”

Overheard

Ava, to her mother: “I think you have come down with a flu of sarcasm.”

Lucky us

Continuing on the Pinerest/Etsy track, I found this cute little keychain via the former and purchased it via the latter. (In hindsight, I’m starting to wonder if Pinterest wasn’t created with Etsy in mind, as it surely must drive a tremendous amount of traffic that way.)

The girls are rather obsessed with coins right now, and their father couldn’t be happier. He’s supplied them with multiple folders to house state quarters, national park coins, and even pennies. So, when I came across this, I just couldn’t pass it up. And then, when it actually arrived, I couldn’t wait until Christmas to give it to Bryan. Which meant I could use the one I purchased for myself immediately, too…

Then pennies are, of course, from 2005, 2007 and 2012. Lucky us, indeed.

Warm hearts and hands

Despite high afternoon temperatures, the mornings are a bit chilly here now. Over the weekend, I made the girls each a set of handwarmers—little, heart-shaped packages filled with jasmine rice.  After just a minute in the microwave, these sweet little things snuggle into jacket pockets to keep my sweet little girls warm. Ava reports they’re still a bit toasty come recess . . . too bad it’s 60 degrees outside by then!
