Boston bound!

Very early Thursday morning, the Bornemeier women took the Kansas City International Airport by storm. Destination: Boston. More specifically: Katie’s house.

Mom and Gramma had arrived the night before, and by 5:30 that morning, we were on our way. Four generations en route to the East Coast, plus enough luggage for a fifth.

Four generations, and–of course–Elmo.

I was more than a little nervous about traveling with a toddler and infant, but with Mom and Gramma along, it was a breeze. The standard electronic equipment and Pixar movies helped quite a bit, too.

We really didn’t check Olivia, I promise.

Here’s what we did check, though: A pack’n’play, an infant seat, an infant seat base, a gigantic suitcase that weighed in at exactly 50 pounds, a stroller, and two additional suitcases that belonged to Mom and Gramma. We carried on Ava’s carseat, a packed diaper bag, two additional bags, three purses, Elmo, and a baby.

Fortunately, Katie met us at baggage claim to help us out to the car. (And, by “car,” I mean the giant van Katie had to rent to haul us and all of our trappings around the city for four days.)

We were on our way!

Have kids, will travel

Bryan’s parents hosted a wonderful family trip to Kansas City last weekend. It provided a perfect opportunity to explore a city that, despite our proximity, we know little about. It also gave Ava and Olivia a chance to catch up with their adorable cousins, and the “big kids” had a great time too.

Friday night, we had dinner on the Country Club Plaza, an area famous for upscale shopping and gorgeous architecture. We (quickly) checked out the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Saturday morning–we discovered it’s not a great place to linger with small children.

I’ll definitely go back, but maybe by myself:

We had lunch at a popular burger joint, then spent the afternoon in walking through the plaza.

Doug and Karyl sent us out on the town sans kids Saturday night, and though we weren’t gone long, the reprieve was much appreciated. As Laura noted, kids often complicate even the simplest of plans.

Yet, somehow, they always redeem themselves. At least in the eyes of their grandparents, anyway.

Additional trip photos tomorrow, including those from a very memorable trip to the zoo. In the meantime, check out Doug’s gallery for more.

Doug set up a photo gallery through .Mac. Gorgeous photos, of course, but you’ll also find very cool viewing features. He’s adding to it regularly. Check it out!

Ava’s Party

Today’s the day! We celebrated Ava’s third birthday today with our families and friends. Thanks to everyone who helped us mark the occasion with a Hello Kitty party!

More party prep

Somehow, it takes two days to prepare for a party that lasts two hours. Good thing we had a lot of help!

Laura iced the number three cookies…

…and watched the kids while I worked on the Hello Kitty cake and cookies.

Karyl and Gramma made sandwiches…

While Katie untangled the 30 balloons Doug picked up.

Mom brought the angel food cake…

And Bryan tested the party whiskers and nose.

Easter Eggs!

Aunt Laura and Ava helped dye eggs for our Easter Sunday brunch. We created marbleized eggs by adding a bit of oil to the dye–it worked better for some colors than others, but the overall effect was very pretty.

Party preparation

Ava’s celebrating her third birthday this weekend. Fortunately, her grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins will be here to join us.

It’s incredibly sweet of everyone to make the trip down–especially considering 19 house guests make for relatively tight quarters. Thanks to a lot of wine, though, no one seems to mind. (You won’t mind, will you? I have gin, too!)

I’m working on Hello Kitty cookies (thanks to a hand-crafted cookie cutter courtesy of the greatest step-dad ever), and I’m planning a giant (pink) Hello Kitty cake. Bryan’s plowing through his own pre-party to do list, which conveniently includes organizing the kitchen cabinets and pantry. Laura arrives tonight, and I promised I’d put her to work as well over the next few days.

At some point, I’m sure I’ll become a bit misty thinking about Ava’s birthday, but right now, it’s all I can do to answer the 117 questions she has regarding the weekend’s events. (“Is today my birthday?” “No, it’s actually Monday.” “Why?” “I don’t know, it just is.” “Why?” “Um, because the hospital was full the date your induction was originally scheduled.” “Why? Why! Mommy, why?”)

Three is a fun age.
