Summer storms

Nights like last night make 100-degree weather worth it.

But then again, maybe not

“But Mom, I am REALLY sure Liv wants to sit on my lap.”

Overheard

Ava: I really wish Aunt Katie could bring her kitty Sophie with her when she visits.

Mom: Really? Doesn’t Sophie bite?

Ava: No!

Mom: Oh, was I thinking of someone else? Dagny, maybe?

Ava: No, you were thinking of Olivia.

This seems unreasonable.

A headline from our local paper:

Livie Lou Who Fix

I am starting to get a little nervous about our plan to wean Liv off of pacifiers by the time she’s two.

Sweets for the sweet

I recently ordered the new Martha Stewart Cupcakes cookbook, and it is filled with amazing ideas. The recipes are what really caught my eye, but not surprisingly, there are fabulous decorating ideas, too.

Ava and I made these golf cupcakes for Father’s Day. Since Bryan’s only request for the day was to watch the U.S. Open, they seemed fitting! He did think it would be more realistic if his golf ball was in the sand trap rather than by the pin, though…

Happy Father’s Day!

I made this slideshow for Bryan today to honor his three obsessions–Ava, Olivia and, more recently, Steve Perry.

Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads in our lives. We love you!

UPDATE: Tom and the Tinman

Our friend Tom participated in the Topeka Tinman Triathalon today, and the Smith girls were there to cheer him on. We missed the swim, which started very early this morning, but we did see him from afar on his bike.

We stationed ourselves near the transition area, where the athletes ditched their bikes and started the run. Tom was definitely in the head of the pack of more than 150, and he took a few seconds to give Ava a high five as he passed by.

We spent the rest of our girls’ day out playing at the park, having brunch at Lulu’s Cafe, riding the train at the zoo and hitting the mall.

UPDATE: As we expected, Tom did very well yesterday! He finished fourth in his age group, and was only two minutes behind second place. He placed 34th overall. Way to go!

Eyes on the sky

We’ve seen a string of storms since I shot this bit of sun on Saturday. Nothing too serious–just a fair amount of wind, rain and lightening.
