Snow, man!

For the second weekend in a row, we have a bit of snow. A couple of inches last week, a 65 degree day on Thursday, and another sprinkling last night. I love Kansas.

Snowmen, however, don’t hang around here long.

The Gourds

dsc07106

My friend Dawn grew these gourds in her garden this summer–aren’t they beautiful? There was some mingling between the pumpkins and one type of gourd, which resulted in a rather interesting hybrid.

And, note the hedge apple–I found some on sale for 99 cents each at a grocery store in Minnesota this fall. I guess we’re pretty fortunate to find them in our neighbor’s yard for free! (In my defense, our male Osage Orange is the pollinator, so we should at least have joint custody of the offspring, right?)

Harbengers of winter

Temperatures were in the high 70s today, but the appearance of a Dark-Eyed Junco in the backyard reminded us of what’s to come…soon.

First freeze

We had our first hard freeze last night–temperatures were still below 30 this morning.

I clustered the mums and covered them with a heavy blanket–they seemed to do just fine.

Weekend wrap-up

We had really lovely weather here last weekend–and as such, took the opportunity to be outside as much as possible. On Sunday, we visited a pumpkin patch outside of town.

Ava loved the playground…

And the hay maze…

And she even ran into her friend Brandon!

Olivia was happy just being outside.

When we got home, we planted some bulbs for spring…

And ditched the potted shrubs in favor of something a bit more seasonal.

Minnesota wrap-up

More fall color…the only comforting thought about leaving Minnesota is that we’ll be able to experience fall all over again. If it’s half this beautiful here, we’ll be fortunate.

One last ride

We took one last boat ride before leaving the cabin last weekend. Ava was all smiles at the start.

Grampa’s pretty trusting these days–he didn’t even remind us not to “bend it” as we left!

Of course, he probably didn’t realize we’d let Ava drive.

We’ve been debating the merits of a boat purchase for a good three months now. Ava, in an effort to destroy any illusion that it might indeed be a good idea, starting to grouse about going home approximately 90 seconds after leaving the dock.

I still think it would be a good investment. We pulled Liv on board when we got back for a quick family photo. Look how happy we are!

Well, some of us, anyway.

I’m still optimistic. A love for the water is in my blood; it has to be in theirs, too, right?

Mushroom mystery

These mushrooms were growing on a tree near the cabin. I have no idea what they are. If only I knew a  mycologist

A preview

We took a quick trip to the cabin in Minnesota this weekend and caught fall colors at their very peak! More photos soon.
