Fish tales

We took the girls fishing while visiting the lake this weekend. Bryan and Dave spent most of the weekend in the boat, and as such, caught quite a few fish, some of which were large enough to keep for the fish fry we had on Monday.

To make things a bit more exciting for Ava, Dave secretly baited her hook with a small catfish he had caught earlier in the day. When he alerted her to her bouncing pole, she excitedly reeled in her catch.

Everyone was pretty excited about this…

But we were downright shocked when Ava had two more actual bites on her little pole!

Olivia eventually lost interest…

And she missed her dad’s big catch.

Backyard wildlife

Mom and Dave have a number of deer that visit their yard in the evening. I managed to catch one through their spotting scope.

May flowers

I planted several flowers before Ava’s birthday, but they succumbed to a late frost. I finally managed to plant a few new things this weekend, thanks to Gramma Great, who provided many new pots, and to Ava, who helped quite a bit!

Birds in our backyard

In the last two weeks we had yellow warblers, Nashville warblers, and yellow-rumped warblers traveling through and a few more I couldn’t identify. A rose-breasted grosbeak arrived yesterday at the feeders and was here tonight. Two house wrens have occupied our wren house recently. We’ve had a few brown thrashers near our garden.

Also, scissor-tailed flycatchers have arrived outside where I work.

The dark-eyed juncos and white throated sparrows have moved on.

Backyard business

We had a few new (or at least rare) visitors to the backyard birdfeeders this week.

Over the weekend, Bryan spotted a White Throated Sparrow and a Brown Headed Cowbird. Yesterday, we saw a Song Sparrow. We also have a number of Mourning Doves–far more than the single pair that usually hangs out under the pear tree.

It must be Josh’s suet!

Spring. Seriously this time.

Suet to it

When Josh was here for Ava’s party, he stirred up a big pot of homemade suet using peanut butter, lard, oatmeal and birdseed. Bryan recently set it out for the birds (and the squirrels), and it was incredibly popular. Thanks, Josh!

Blogfodder thanks to the Blogfather

While visiting this weekend, Doug put out a tray of catfood to attract birds like Bluejays. It didn’t work out exactly as expected…

Liana and Coca (and Tom, too!)

As I mentioned last week, Liana spent a few days with us, and then this weekend, our friend Tom came down from Madison as well. We’re fortunate that so many of our Wisconsin friends make the trip down to Kansas. (Maybe it has something to do with the quickly melting snow…)

Anyway, I missed a few photos from Liana’s visit–namely, our trip to the dog park with Coca.

The trip wore out both Ava and Coca, but only one took a nap…

Liana and Tom: Come back soon. Send others in the meantime. 😉
