Seven and a half hours

After months of waking up numerous times at night, it seems Olivia is settling into longer sleep cycles. Last night, she went to bed at 9:30 p.m. and didn’t wake up again until 5 a.m.

Two nights ago, she slept a full six hours. (So did I–when I realized I hadn’t woken up since I laid down at 10 p.m., I was in a complete panic. I found her quietly snoozing in her crib, and then I promptly woke her up.) Despite the frantic start, it was the first time in–what, a year?–that I have slept that long. I felt like a new woman.

Let’s celebrate with–what else–a photo of Olivia. Sleeping. With her thumb in her mouth. Can you take just one more photo like this?

I will add, because I know some of you have been curious, Ava’s doing okay in the sleep department, too. Thanks to our outstanding parenting philosophy of an alternating cycle of threats and bribes, she’s falling asleep in her own bed. (When she started preschool a about six weeks ago, we decided to postpone any sleep battles and just put her in bed with us at 8 p.m. The upshot was that we were all getting a lot of sleep. The downside is that we were actually missing out on some daylight.)

So even though she’s falling asleep in her own bed, she is not, however, sleeping through the night. We usually find her in our bed at some point–some nights, it’s 11 p.m., sometimes it’s closer to morning.

Believe it or not, I don’t mind.

Sound sleeper

If I’d been just a second or two earlier, I’d have photographic evidence that Olivia really will sleep anywhere.

Hey there

Rice is nice

After a few more near sleepless nights, I did decide to start Olivia on rice cereal.

She took her first bites in front 14 family members Saturday night–Ava even helped feed her. (As an aside, I’ll say that it’s nice to share such a moment with grandparents, aunts and uncles. We’ve been fortunate in this way–my mom was there when we brought both girls home from the hospital, Grandma Smith saw both Ava and Olivia roll over for the first time, and Laura and Josh saw Ava take her first steps, just to name a few lucky examples.)

While she wasn’t quite sure what it was all about at first, she’s now quite taken with the whole process. Tonight, she bounced up and down between bites, opening her mouth like a fledgling in anticipation.

Still, though, she refuses to sleep through the night.

It’s a good things she’s cute.

What to do, what to do?

I’m thinking about starting Olivia on cereal.

I know, I know–she’s barely four months old. I waited until Ava was exactly six months old to introduce solid food, because that’s what “the book” said, and it’s what the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends.

But, the pediatricians in said academy aren’t the ones getting up to feed Olivia three times a night. I am, and I am tired! Fortunately, those midnight feedings give me plenty of time to obsess over concerns like…oh, I don’t know…starting solid foods.

I’ve done quite a bit of reading on the matter, and even the AAP acknowledges some babies might be ready around four months. Dr. Sears says if a baby is shortening the intervals between feedings, and several days of more frequent feedings don’t change this, it may be time to begin solids. (Dr. Sears also says it’s fine to put kids in your bed, though, and we know how well that works out.)

There’s a small part of me that worries she’s over-compensating because I’m gone during the day. And, if that’s really the case, then I don’t want to take that time at night away from her. I don’t mind a nighttime feeding, actually–it’s nice to have some time that’s devoted just to her. The second or third, though, I could do without.

Tell me what to do. I’m too sleepy to make a decision.
