Olivia’s accoutrements

In the past few months, Olivia has amassed items that she collectively refers to as her “night-nights.” An odd choice of words, considering that she carries them with her about 24 hours a day.  She left them unattended briefly yesterday, and I snapped a quick photo.

You can see both of her blankets, her teddy bear, Ugli Doll and her lovey (a.k.a  Stinky). Only her pacifier and pink teddy bear are missing–my guess is she still had those with her.

Ava didn’t really develop this type of attachment. I tried very hard with with a stuffed duck, hoping that by tucking it in bed with her, she’d feel comfortable on her own (fail). There was also the Incredible Hulk phase, where she adopted one of Bryan’s old action figures for a few weeks. Beyond that, though, she never really had a particular item (or items) that she wanted with her at all times.

I keep waiting for Olivia to move on, but instead, her attachments seem to grow stronger.

I only took one photo on our trip to Nebraska this weekend–I’m glad it was this one!

Everyone’s a critic

Parents need to have pretty thick skin–EVERYONE has an opinion about how you are raising your children.

I was reminded of this early today when we brought the potty chair out of storage for Olivia. She has been telling us when she needs to have her diaper changed, and she’s even been giving us a bit of warning in some cases. We thought she might be interested in this option, but our efforts haven’t been supported by all.

“You’re potty training Olivia?” The voice dripped with incredulous skepticism.  “She’s not even two yet.”

The critic here?

My four year old.

A day at the zoo

We took the girls to the Topeka zoo today to celebrate what feels like the first day of fall.

We seemed to catch most of the animals mid-nap.

Any guesses as to who will not take a nap?

Sunday project

Last weekend, my mom and Dave sent home about two bushels of Roma tomatoes from their garden. I stashed them in the fridge last week and canned them today.

IMG_1336

It took far longer to prepare the tomatoes than it did to actually can them. I began by blanching them in boiling water, then dumping them into an ice bath. This made it very easy to slip the skins.

I sent these skins right down the garbage disposal.

IMG_1344

(Just kidding, Dave–they went into the garbage can.)

I ended up with three big bowls of skinless tomatoes.

A rather hungry Olivia kept me company this morning, coming over about every five minutes to politely plead, “More ‘matos, p’ease.”

Bryan helped me core and dice the tomatoes, which I then heated to a simmer. I decided not to add salt or seasonings–I hope that’s not a mistake.

While the tomatoes cooked, I washed the jars and held them in a sink full of warm water.

Almost two hours after setting the canner on the burner, the water finally came to a boil. I filled the jars and processed them for 45 minutes.

The morning’s efforts resulted in seven quart jars of diced tomatoes. Now, if only fall would arrive. I suddenly feel like making chili.

This felt like a huge project, but my mom does this most every night after work. And, my friend Dawn probably cans this much before breakfast each day. It’s certainly not an easy project, but it’s definitely a rewarding one. Thanks for providing the possibility, Mom!
