The Grandparents Great

When I found out I needed another sinus surgery a couple of weeks ago, my grandparents offered to come down and help us out as I recovered. Having been through this before, I politely declined, noting that it was minor, outpatient and really not a big deal.

As I thought about it more, I became a bit worried about being released in time to pick the kids up from daycare that day. I also remembered that I have an embarrassingly low tolerance for pain and discomfort, and my grandma is quite possibly the nicest person on the entire planet.

So, I emailed her again, asking if I could please reconsider my initial response. Happily, they promised to arrive the day before my surgery and stay with the kids through the middle of the week.

Gramma and Grampa came on Monday night, loaded with casseroles for our freezer and the healing elixir that is homemade chicken noodle soup. They spoiled all of us for days, taking great care of us and reminding me they are two of the most generous, caring and utterly selfless people I have ever had the pleasure to know.

And, on top of all of that, Gramma and Ava made sugar cookies . . . I am truly blessed, no?

A&O Fix

The girls have had a bit of cabin fever lately. Fortunately, the sidewalks are finally melting!

Olivia Fix

I did try to find a recent photo of Olivia wearing clothes.

I failed.

Snow business

Five or six extra inches of snow last night, coupled with dangerously low wind chill temperatures, kept us at home today. This is the first time in four winters I’ve ever seen this much snow here. In fact, this may be more than we’ve had the last few years combined. I love it, and the girls, who are indulging in movies and popcorn all day, are pretty happy too.

Snuggle up, buttercup

My mom made the girls matching “snuggies” after Ava saw them on TV and had to have one. Now, she can do all sorts of wild things!

These have been handy this weekend—it’s brutally cold here. We have eight or so inches of snow (another three last night), and the temperatures haven’t moved much out of the single digits. What’s it like where you are?

Somehow, Santa found us…

Despite a blizzard that put us about 200 miles off our intended course this week, Santa found Ava and Olivia at Gramma Great’s house, where we camped out for five days and watched the wind whip the snow into six foot drifts. More photos soon!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas kisses

That’s some serious hat hair, Liv.

Ava Fix(ing dinner)

Ava has been requesting spaghetti and meatballs for about two years now. Last weekend, we finally put her to work with this recipe from Gourmet.

After she combined the ingredients and formed the balls, I browned them on the stove.

After a simmering in sauce for a couple of hours, they were ready.

Guess who else was a big fan of this dish?

Out of necessity, spaghetti night is also bath night.
