First harvest

Bryan found the first mid-summer crop in the garden yesterday—two giant cucumbers that we probably should have located and picked last week. I had no idea they’d be ready so soon—we just finished the peas and lettuce a couple of weeks ago.

Bryan chopped up the cucumbers with onions and tossed them into a mixture of vinegar, sugar, water and salt. The recipe suggested that this marinade could be kept all summer—just add more cucumbers as needed. Those of you who know Bryan won’t be surprised when he tosses it after a mere 48 hours.

Happy Father’s Day!

I made this slideshow for Bryan today to honor his three obsessions–Ava, Olivia and, more recently, Steve Perry.

Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads in our lives. We love you!

Happy 31st!

Happy birthday, Bryan.

Fish tales

We took the girls fishing while visiting the lake this weekend. Bryan and Dave spent most of the weekend in the boat, and as such, caught quite a few fish, some of which were large enough to keep for the fish fry we had on Monday.

To make things a bit more exciting for Ava, Dave secretly baited her hook with a small catfish he had caught earlier in the day. When he alerted her to her bouncing pole, she excitedly reeled in her catch.

Everyone was pretty excited about this…

But we were downright shocked when Ava had two more actual bites on her little pole!

Olivia eventually lost interest…

And she missed her dad’s big catch.

Overheard: Third baby debate

Bry: We could adopt…

Bec: I hadn’t considered that.

Bry: Yeah, we could adopt a 14 year old so we have a built in babysitter for the other two.

Bec: I think that’s indentured servitude.

Bry: No, think about it–it’s perfect. There must be so many teenagers in need of good homes.

Bec: Yeah, no.

Suet to it

When Josh was here for Ava’s party, he stirred up a big pot of homemade suet using peanut butter, lard, oatmeal and birdseed. Bryan recently set it out for the birds (and the squirrels), and it was incredibly popular. Thanks, Josh!

Shear Excellent Parenting

Bryan here.  I’m home alone tonight with both girls.  I assured Bec that everything would be okay leaving the girls with me.  After all, I have almost 4 years of experience in responsible parenting.  However, within just 30 minutes of arriving home with both girls tonight, I went to check on Ava who was playing quietly while I was making dinner and tending to Livie (who was hungry and grouchy).  Guess what Ava was doing and how much trouble Daddy will be in when Mommy returns?   Here’s a hint:

In my defense, those are safety scissors, but I think I’ll probably still be in trouble:
