Ava’s preschool teacher sent home a homework assignment along with the note, “All kids love homework.” It’s been a while, but I am pretty sure that’s just not true. Perhaps she’s on to something, though, because as Ava completed her assignment (filling a little sack with things that are red), she grew more and more excited.

Overheard: Grandparent edition
This morning, Doug emailed three little remarks he heard Ava make in the past few months. He wanted help in preserving them, so I offered to post them here. It’s a perfect addition for Grandparents’ Day.
So, from Grandpa Smith…
1) “Grandpa – why are you wearing your barn hat?” (I was wearing a straw hat.)
2) I saw Ava walking toward the house with a flower in her hand. I said to Rebecca, “Oh, I think maybe Ava’s is bringing a flower to her mommy.” Ava came in and handed it to Rebecca, who thanked her profusely, really beaming. A seemingly perfect mother-and-child moment, that ends with Ava saying: “I stepped on it.”
3) We took Ava on then golf cart down to Chris and Martie’s. When we passed their over-the-top eagle sculpture, with its talons prominently jutting out, Ava said, “Grandpa, why does that eagle have toenails?”

Labor Day Weekend
We took a little trip to Mom and Dave’s house this weekend. We were only there for a few days, but we still had time to watch a few storms roll by…
…and play endless games with Gramma…
…and Papa.
We baked cookies…
…were completely spoiled…
…spent time outside…
and ate delicious grilled meals.
We also checked out the local wildlife…
…played a round of golf…
…chatted with Aunt Katie over the phone…
…and watched 40 mph winds whip the lake into a frenzy.
It was a great weekend!

Big (girl) news
Guess who has a “real” big girl bed?

Despite the fact Ava hasn’t spent a night in her own room in weeks, we lugged a queen-size bed up from the basement and set it up for her. She was VERY excited and decided that she could fit a lot more of her babies into this bed. (All of them, in fact.)
We started taking Ava to a chiropractor for sleep issues a few months ago, and while I’m not sure it’s doing anything, it feels good to be proactive. We’ve also increased her magnesium intake, which again, is probably fruitless. Still, though, she’s been sleeping on the couch in our room, and not spread-eagle between us, so we’ll count that as an improvement.
It’s only 9 pm, but I can report that she’s asleep in that new bed. At least for now…

Go bananas
Ava is becoming quite the cook. She practically made banana muffins herself this weekend, right down to cracking the eggs.

I think I’ll teach her to make dinner next.

No Babies Allowed
When I was little, I remember my mom adding a card table to the end of the dining room table and covering the entire thing with afghans. Katie and I would play under there for hours.
Ava has set up camp in the living room. Her “fort,” made with a sheet, blanket and card table, has become her favorite hang out. It’s the playroom, doctor’s office–anything she can imagine.
The only thing it lacks is a baby-proofing moat.
And, speaking of sisters, Bryan’s sister Jessica celebrated her birthday yesterday. Happy birthday!

Reasons why “Wivie Woo Who” may not–under any circumstances–play with Ava’s Legos:
“She’ll put them in her mouth. Oh, Mom, she’s putting them in her mouth!”
“These are big girl toys. Wivie Woo Who is a BABY.”
“They have sharp edges! MOM–I said, they have sharp edges!”
“This is ridiculous. She has her own toys. WE PLAY WITH OUR OWN TOYS.”
