Summer blog break

We’re taking a break this week to indulge in a bit of summer fun. We’ll see you back here after the Fourth. Have a great holiday, everyone!

Rite of passage

Ava has been pleading with me for months to have a lemonade stand–literally, she started asking about it when there was still snow on the ground. She even worked hard at school to figure out the mechanics of making change. (I suggested she charge 32 cents a cup to keep things interesting.)

By Memorial Day weekend, she seemed ready to take on the task, and so we helped her set up a stand at Mom’s garage sale. She made a cool $3.25 (including tips) for her efforts.

Look for Girl Scout cookie or mutual fund sales next.

At the lake

This time of year, I want to spend as much time by the water as possible. Bryan suggested a picnic at Clinton Lake the weekend before last, and we were met with gorgeous weather and an even better view.

I took my soon-to-be first grader to visit her new school this week. We were here a year ago for Kindergarten round-up, but elected to stay in the Montessori program rather than transitioning to the public school. Now, it’s time to move on.

Ava was excited about the visit, but spoke less and less as we toured the school and visited the three first grade classrooms. By the time we’d made our way through the library and back to the front office, she was completely silent. Fortunately, we both saw a couple of very familiar faces–Ava’s friend, Lia, who will start Kindergarten at Quail Run this fall, and her mom, Susie.

The timing couldn’t have been better!

This looks safe.

I don’t normally find myself to be an overprotective parent, but after seeing this photo, I may either take out the swing set or require a biking helmet while it’s in use.

You should have seen the carbon footprint on that thing!

We walked in Saturday’s Earth Day parade with Ava and Olivia’s school. The girls wore wings, pinned butterflies in their hair, and carried mini globes. The parents wished it was much, much warmer than 37 degrees.

Ava’s on the right edge of the sign.

At one point, Ava said, “Hey look, Mom, I’m holding the Earth in my hands!”

Thankfully, she didn’t chide us for driving to the parade in an SUV while drinking coffee out of disposal cups…

Overheard…er, MISheard

Bec: “Ava, tell Dad there’s a white throated sparrow out here.”

Ava: “What?”

Bec: “A white throated sparrow!”

Ava: “DAD, THERE’S A WHITE HEADED SQUIRREL! COME QUICK!”
