Ava earned a spot to represent her fourth grade class in the school’s annual spelling bee last week. She competed against 11 classmates in fourth and fifth grades, lasting six rounds before dropping the “e” on “inhale.” She claimed she wasn’t nervous, but my stomach flipped every time she marched toward the podium. Even Uncle Tom admitted to being a bit jittery himself.
