There’s an interesting article about the changes down on Sesame Street on CNN.com this morning. I was going to post snippets of the text, but really, the article is short and completely worth the read, especially if you were born before 1984.
Check it out here. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

As a parent, I would like to hear your musings on this. I enjoyed sesame street going up but I also knew not to go to a stranger’s house just because you could on Sesame Street. How do you feel about the pipe and cookies Rebecca?

I’m not sure that we’re doing children any favors by trying to sanitize the world for them. I don’t see the point in it since eventually (probably more quickly than we think) they’re going to figure out that the world is not always bright and cheery and scrubbed clean. I’d also be interested in seeing the statistics showing how many children became pipe smokers because of Cookie Monster.

I agree. Kids know when things are sanitized. A Cookie Monster who doesn’t obsess over cookies is pretty weak pablum. What’s next? Pretty-good-sized Bird? Oscar the Mildly Discomfited?

I loved Sesame Street as a kid. . The pipe, well, when we were kids we used to eat those candy cigarettes….I used to beg my dad for a licorice pipe at the corner store. I think I turned out ok….;) Did anyones parents ever just let them eat cookies? Cookies in our house were a big deal and you couldn’t pig out on them either.
You can’t blame everything on tv, as parents we are still responsible for how our kids live their lives.

I haven’t seen Sesame Street in a very long time. It was watched every day after school at our house. And Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, and Electric Company. There was a time when I thought the shows were becoming too politically correct – but if Cookie Monster is smoking – anything – how can that be???? Maybe there is marijuana in the pipe – several congressmen have entertained the thought of approving it’s use so that they can tax it. Could raise tons of money to replace all the tax revenues lost because fewer people are smoking tobacco cigarettes.
