Truly old-fashioned cooking

Many years ago, my grandmother gave me an old recipe box that belong to my grandfather’s aunt. I was glad to receive it, but until recently, I hadn’t given it much thought. I came across it the other day while organizing the kitchen cabinets, and I set it out on the counter.

When I had time to look through it last weekend, I was immediately grateful to have this culinary time capsule. The box belonged to my Great, Great Aunt Marie Lena Rebekah. My grandma, correct in assuming I’d confuse Aunt Marie with my grandpa’s step mother Anna Marie, left me a note in the front of the box. (Never one to be wasteful, she wrote this note on the back of a funeral program. Seeing her handwriting and being reminded again of her quirks made the time all that much more worthwhile.)

I found that most of the recipes were desserts, which immediately endeared me to this woman I’d never met. She had an entire sections devoted to icing alone.

Most of the cards were handwritten with a fountain pen. Aside from some tearing around the edges and smeared ink, they are in remarkable shape. I found several recipes for burnt sugar cake and settled on the one that seemed to be the most used, hoping that it meant it was a favorite.

The recipe starts, as you might expect, with burnt sugar:

The instructions were a bit vague, as though she was familiar with the process and only needed to capture the measurements. The recipe noted two egg whites to be added at the end, for instance, and after sampling the cake, I know she must have intended they be whipped and folded in.

As the cakes baked, Ava and I made a burnt sugar filling, which was incredibly sweet and almost crunchy. The fact that I had a Kitchen-Aid and battery-operated candy thermometer at my disposal didn’t pass unnoticed.

Ava and I finished the cake with a burnt sugar frosting recipe we found online, and topped it with walnuts. The cake was moist (if not a little dense due to my misstep with the egg whites), and the filling and frosting were sweet enough to make a tiny piece satisfying. I will likely make this again with a few adjustments, and I am looking forward to seeing what else I can find in Aunt Marie’s recipe box.

Corrective measures

I took Ava in to our stylist Jen to have her hair cut after her own foray into the world of cosmotology. Jen echoed everyone else’s thoughts on the situation, explaining that assignments like this were a pretty regular occurance. She shortened Ava’s bob and cut asymetrical pixie bangs, declaring her right on trend.

There’s no place like home

Our friend Tom moved to Kansas this weekend (something I think a few more of you should consider). We are all thrilled to have him–Bryan, of course, but his two biggest fans are also his littlest:

In like a lion…

The nice thing about Kansas is that by the time you get around to posting photos of the weekend snowfall, it’s already melted.

Blogfodder thanks to the Blogfather

While visiting this weekend, Doug put out a tray of catfood to attract birds like Bluejays. It didn’t work out exactly as expected…

Grandma and Grandpa!

Grandma and Grandpa Smith came for a visit last week, driving down on Wednesday in advance of a concert Bryan and I had planned to attend. The concert was canceled, but we went out anyway that night (and the night after that, and the night after that) knowing full well the children were in good hands.

When it came time to say goodbye on Saturday morning, Ava wanted to take the traditional parting photo with her own camera:

I cajoled her in joining the group herself, wherein she proceeded to handle the impending departure with her usual grace and charm.

Sorry, Bangs, but they’ll be back before you know it.

Overheard: New words edition

Olivia: More milk!

(In all fairness, Olivia has said “milk” before, but it happened while I was in Madison. I was surprised that Bryan didn’t call to tell me about the new word. He said, “Well, she also tried to use a spoon to drink water out of the toliet. Did you want me to call and tell you that, too?”)

A rare sight

Liana’s shower

The last in my Madison posts…

dsc08188

Liana’s Mom Ellie and I hosted a shower for Liana in Madison on Saturday afternoon. We chose the eclectic and off beat Lazy Jane’s Cafe because it’s one of Liana and Scott’s neighborhood favorites. It suits Liana so well, and the catering staff did an amazing job of making sure we had everything we needed.

Liana’s a biochemist who teaches chemistry and edits a scientific journal, so I tried to bring that into the theme of the shower. I adapted the periodic table invitations from discontinued cards I found on Pink Loves Brown.

We had guests write messages in one of my favorite children’s books, Guess How Much I Love You.

I sent a copy of the invitation to the cake maker Liana worked with for her wedding cake. The artists did a great job of capturing the theme, and they used the same cake and filling Liana requested for the wedding cake. Scott pointed out that the script used for Liana’s name looks exactly like her signature.

Lazy Jane’s has a cozy little nook for kids which was perfect for the present opening later that night.

We selected a Mediterranean inspired menu with chicken salad, tabbouleh, hummus and Greek salad.

The staff even set up a special table for the kids:

Liana, Alisa and Melissa hosted a baby shower for me when I was pregnant with Ava, and as part of the festivities, the guests decorated onesies for Ava to use throughout her first year. They were amazing–and I saved all of them. We did the same for Liana.

Guess who made this one?

Liana has so many wonderful friends–everywhere she goes, she reaches out and makes connections that span years, if not decades. I feel so fortunate that she counts me among them. I simply cannot wait to meet her new little baby. Only a few weeks away!
