Progress

We spent the weekend tackling the first of many organizational projects.

Top on the list: my closet. I found this shoe contraption at the hardware store. Like any “As seen on TV” product, it features a ridiculous “before” shot to illustrate just how well it will work:

img_2246

Wait, did I say “ridiculous?” I mean “realistic.” Here’s the actual “before” shot of my closet.

img_2243

The “after” was just as good as the box promised.

Next up, the closet downstairs.

I repurposed my old, smaller shoe organizer here, and that cleared the floor…for a moment at least. I later found Ava and her babies in the closet playing Hello Kitty Bingo by flashlight.

And finally, the dreaded pantry. This is the house catch-all–if you don’t know where to put it, put it in the pantry. As a result, it looks like this most of the time:

Two hours later, it was slightly better. In Bry’s words, “It’s a good start…”

Three areas down, 347 to go.

Good recipes, great company

I’m still doing a bit of catch-up from the holidays, and I wanted to share a few recipes that Laura and I made for New Year’s Eve and New Years Day (this post coming later).

On NYE, Karyl turned over the potholders and chef’s knife, granting us use of her spacious kitchen. Plus, she supplied the groceries and did the dishes. Not a bad deal.

Laura and I stuck to Barefoot Contessa recipes almost exclusively, turning out the following dishes.

Roasted Potato Leek Soup with Crispy Shallots, a really wonderful (and pretty) starter. I will definitely make this again.

Beef tenderloin, which we just brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with kosher salt:

Roasted cauliflower topped with Parmesan and Gruyere:

Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Warm Cider Vinaigrette:

We also served French bread with an herb compound butter. For dessert, Laura made an incredible homemade caramel sauce for butter pecan sundaes.

Later that night, Doug poured the champagne, we engaged in the traditional banging of pots and pans.

Theme songs

This post clearly violates Resolution 5, but…

I think there are probably only a few people who know that I almost always have a current theme song. My assistant does; Bryan’s probably figured it out since I go through phases of listening to the same song over and over. Olivia rides with me in the morning–she definitely knows, but seems to keeps secrets relatively well (at least so far).

Every once in a while, I just hear a song that speaks to me–like it’s a soundtrack for that moment or phase or challenge–usually on the professional front.

Last month I was hooked on “Float On” by Modest Mouse. Essentially, things are rough, but it will work out.

Right now, things are going really well. As such, my new (though probably temporary) theme song is “Big Casino” by Jimmy Eat World. It’s not a particularly new song (and not a particularly great band, at least in my book), but it’s just so…optimistic:

Get up, Get up
Turn my ignition
Get up, Get up
Fire up the system
Play my little part in something big

I’ll accept with poise with grace
When they draw my name from the lottery
And they’ll say all the salt in the world couldn’t melt that ice
I’m the one who gets away
I’m a New Jersey success story
And they’ll say Lord give me the chance to shake that hand

And yet, it’s realistic. My favorite part comes at the end:

I have one last wish
And it’s from the heart
Just let me down
Just let me down easy

It’s just perfect right now.Of course, this kind of optimism lands me in trouble. When I’m in over my head, I can always go back to this.

I can’t be alone. Is anyone else willing to share their theme song?

Overheard

Me: Ava, we need to think about your birthday party. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a ladybug birthday party?

Ava: I want a princess party!

Me: Or, a butterfly party–that would be great!

Ava: No, a princess party.

Me: What do you mean, a princess party?

Ava: You know, the princesses–Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella and Dora when she was a princess! Yeah, and we could have Boots, too!

Me: A Sleeping Beauty part would be fun, and kind of ironic.

Ava: No, all of the princesses, Mom.

Me: Well, how about a butterfly party?

Ava: Yeah, the princesses could all be holding butterflies!

Me: Well, that’s not exactly what I had in mind. Oh, I know, a puzzle party! You love puzzles.

Ava: Sure, the princesses could be holding butterflies and playing puzzles!

Me: Oh, Ava.

Ava: Oh, honey.

Be it resolved

Like most of you, I have a few resolutions this new year. I always have resolutions, and oddly enough, they’re usually the same ones. Perhaps my first resolution should be FINISH WHAT YOU START, but whatever. Also, be less snarky.

Anyway:

  1. Under promise, over deliver. I seem to have a problem with over commitment, which leaves me tired and crabby, especially when it comes to the people to whom I should be the nicest. And, speaking of…
  2. Be nicer to Bryan. Spend more time playing with the kids. Be a better wife and mom. (So much for that whole “under promise, over deliver” business.)
  3. Keep a more organized home. And car. And office. Sure, they look neat on the surface, but you’d better duck for cover when you open a cabinet or closet. To this end, I have a three-page list of all the nooks and crannies around the house that need to be organized. And, just because I spend an hour or more a day in my car, it doesn’t need to look like I actually live there.
  4. Lose 25 pounds. I lost 30 last year, so this seems somewhat manageable. To make this work, I need a follow-up resolution: Do not get pregnant. Still thinking about that one.
  5. Stop sharing so much personal information with the world at large.
  6. Read more books. And not the kind with pictures (sorry, Ava). Read four–just four, for crying out loud–actual, real books that have at least some literary merit. Try to convince Bryan to read them, too, so we have something to discuss besides the Forbes cover story and the current state of Olivia’s ears.
  7. Spend less time online. Or at least cut back on celebrity gossip. As Katie said, TMZ is not the news. She makes a good point.
  8. Make more time for real hobbies, like quilting and cooking.

The irony here is that to really achieve my first resolution (and my fifth, seventh and eighth, too), I shouldn’t have posted any of these.

What a rocky start!

And, as I noted over on the THOH, together these resolutions can be summed up in one: Be someone else. Maybe next year I’ll resolve to be at peace with who I am.

Sometimes the hardest part about traveling is just finding a little time (and space) for yourself.

The Day After the Day After

And you thought I was kidding about that whole 57 parts thing.

We met up with the Bornemeier side of the family on Saturday. I love this gathering–the food is always delicious, there’s a lot of wine, and you get to take mid-afternoon naps on one of the many couches (or the floor, if you’re not fast enough). It’s hard to beat Gramma’s house.

To kick things off, we posed for the traditional family photo. You know the one–there’s three people taking photos with six different cameras, so half the subjects are looking one way and the other half are looking the other.

At least Mom has this in focus. As I looked through my photos from the last few posts, it seems I had misplaced what few photography skills I had. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the wine. Or eggnog.

And speaking of, Liv got scotch for Christmas!

dsc07703

Oops, I guess that belongs to her dad. Sorry, Bry.

dsc07704

Don’t worry, Olivia, I’m sure there’s something less toxic for you under the tree.

dsc07693

We were back at Smiths for the rest of the week. There was a wedding on Sunday, the Smith family Christmas gathering on Monday, and a baby shower on Tuesday. We were able to spend a lot of time just relaxing with Bryan’s parents and siblings, which was very nice. Plus, we spent New Year’s there, too.

More photos to come, of course.

The Day After

We traveled to my dad’s the day after Christmas to see him, Rose and my grandpa.

While Ava played with Aunt Katie and Dad, I took advantage of the doctor’s office nearby and got Olivia in for her ongoing ear infection issues. The antibiotic she’d been on for a number of days (the third in a series for this particular–and persistent–infection wasn’t working). Dad’s doctor fixed her up with something new, and she was back to her old self again in a few days.

Rose joined us after she finished her work day, coming home to the great roast chickens Dad had made. We did something else, too, but I just can’t remember what….

Oh, right, presents!

dsc07686

Rose found this “decorate it yourself” teddy bear for Ava. She was thrilled at the idea.

Believe it or not, there’s still more to come…

Christmas Day`

We left Mom, Dave, Gramma and Grampa early Christmas morning–we were on the road for our three hour trip by 8 am.

We spent a lot of time in the car last week, and it has a strange effect on the girls. Olivia, who naps as a hobby and still sleeps about 15 hours a day, refuses to sleep in the car–even when we leave right at naptime. Ava, who will only nap when medicated, falls asleep as the car pulls out of the driveway. So, Ava slept through the three hour trip while Olivia chatted us up from the backseat.

We arrived at Smiths to find Laura making these gorgeous homemade rolls–a tradition from Josh’s side of the family.

dsc07654

Ava and Leo helped their younger siblings open presents–they are so thoughtful.

dsc076571

dsc07679

Olivia loved this playhouse, complete with many, many household sounds.

dsc07671

One of my adorable nephews:

dsc07665

Liv’s not real big on sharing Dad.

dsc07664

Jess, Doug and Wyatt, who carries a blanket like Olivia. I kept pointing out the thumb to Olivia, thinking that maybe she’d forgo the pacifier. No luck.

dsc07663

Aunt Jess made Ava this beautiful quilt.

dsc07673

And, speaking of quilts, Karyl made one for each of the girls–here’s Jess unfurling hers. I’ll post a photo of mine later.

dsc07677

We also received handmade aprons. I’m on the left on this photo taken by Doug. You probably recognize the little one in the middle.

Karyl’s sister and her family joined us for the afternoon. We were just warming up!
