Homework

Ava’s preschool teacher sent home a homework assignment along with the note, “All kids love homework.” It’s been a while, but I am pretty sure that’s just not true. Perhaps she’s on to something, though, because as Ava completed her assignment (filling a little sack with things that are red), she grew more and more excited.

Overheard: Grandparent edition

This morning, Doug emailed three little remarks he heard Ava make in the past few months. He wanted help in preserving them, so I offered to post them here. It’s a perfect addition for Grandparents’ Day.

So, from Grandpa Smith…

1) “Grandpa – why are you wearing your barn hat?” (I was wearing a straw hat.)

2) I saw Ava walking toward the house with a flower in her hand. I said to Rebecca, “Oh, I think maybe Ava’s is bringing a flower to her mommy.” Ava came in and handed it to Rebecca, who thanked her profusely, really beaming. A seemingly perfect mother-and-child moment, that ends with Ava saying: “I stepped on it.”

3) We took Ava on then golf cart down to Chris and Martie’s. When we passed their over-the-top eagle sculpture, with its talons prominently jutting out, Ava said, “Grandpa, why does that eagle have toenails?”

“Only on the paper, Ava”

Ode to the Mom Purse

I always used to carry small handbags–just large enough to fit my wallet, keys, phone and maybe a compact and lipstick. About a year ago, I decided to take the mom purse plunge. It was fabulous! Suddenly, I had room for everything. I could throw in a sippy cup and a Diet Coke, or stash my camera and cord.

I was admiring a new bag large enough to hold my laptop the other day, and I realized I may have taken this just a bit too far.

In fact, while digging for my keys in front of a coworker today, I managed to stumble across a Little Mermaid stamping kit, a Cheerio and three bottles of nail polish (which were all basically the same color)…and a few other things…

That’s right–two compacts, crayons, Dora the Explorer sunglasses, a measuring tape (hi, Mom!), an empty container of mints and its stray, lint-covered belongings, perfume, a teether, lip gloss I’ve never worn, and a pair of flats.

And those are just the things I was brave enough to post.

What’s the strangest thing in your handbag?

A Day’s Work

Bry snapped this photo outside this morning as I was leaving. The web is anchored from points about six feet apart. It looked incredible covered with dew.

Livie Love

Olivia has become quite affectionate lately. I’m sure this sweet phase will last mere minutes, so I’m trying to steal as many “hugs” as possible.

Wild…er, MILD Weather

I came across this Kansas weather tidbit this morning:

In an odd twist of the 80/20 rule, only 20% of this year’s August days were 90 degrees or above, while 80% of last year’s August days were 90 degrees or above.

We sent the girls off today in coats–it’s barely 60 and rainy!

Labor Day Weekend

We took a little trip to Mom and Dave’s house this weekend. We were only there for a few days, but we still had time to watch a few storms roll by…

…and play endless games with Gramma…

…and Papa.

We baked cookies…

…were completely spoiled…

…spent time outside…

and ate delicious grilled meals.

We also checked out the local wildlife…

…played a round of golf…

…chatted with Aunt Katie over the phone…

…and watched 40 mph winds whip the lake into a frenzy.

It was a great weekend!
