Family Day

For the second year in a row, I brought my own family with me to the university’s Family Day. If you have to work on a Saturday, this is a nice way to do it.

Apple picking with Grandpa

Doug was kind enough to pick me a bushel of apples while we were visiting last weekend. Ava was on hand to help out, along with Scout.

We’ve put them to good use–sauteed over pork tenderloin, in apple crisp…

…and in this Streusel Kuchen Ava and I made for Bry’s company picnic this afternoon:

What should we make next? Any favorite apple recipes out there?

Quilt Weekend Wrap-Up

A week later, I’m finally posting photos from the quilting weekend I had with my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law in Nebraska last weekend.

Thanks to Doug, Bryan, Jason and Josh, the kids were completely entertained allowing Karyl, Jess, Debbie, Laura and me to focus on quilting (and wine).

First, the kids. They guys took Ava, Olivia, Leo and Wyatt to the new play structures at the botanical gardens and to the children’s museum.

I hear the big kids had a great time, and despite appearances, the babies were good, too.

It does look Olivia was trying to call me, though.

Back at Smiths, we worked late into the night on various projects. I was thrilled to find that I wasn’t the only one who still had work to do on the quilt I started at last year’s retreat. All in all, though, we made progress on a number of projects.

Laura has better shots of our work over on The House on Hudson, but here’s a quick look at a project I’m working on for Olivia’s room.

It was a wonderful weekend–one that we’re hoping to repeat again soon. Thanks to Doug and Karyl for a lovely time, and to the guys for keeping the kids so happily entertained.

Just a bit longer…

I’m having what Josh calls bloguilt, but instead of actually taking time to write a real post, I’ll just ask you to hang on a few more days until work allows me to breathe again.

Coming soon…a quilt weekend round-up, picking apples with Grandpa, a bit of baking and fun at the dentist. Check back this weekend.

Overheard

Ava, while out on a walk tonight: “Mom! What’s that noise?”

Me: “I don’t know, maybe locusts.”

Ava: “No, cicadas.”

Me: “Cicadas?”

Ava: “Yeah, cicadas. Cicadas are good. Everyone loves them.”

Me: “How do you know about cicadas?”

Ava: “Mom, I just KNOW.”

Check out the bonus Doug added to the grandparents’ edition of Overheard here. More to come on the quilt weekend soon. In the meantime, Laura has some posts up over on The House on Hudson.

More signs of the season

Live blogging…

A tornado warning. No worries, though (Mom); we’re not in the path.

Ava at Nine Months

Liana’s request has sparked a debate in our house. Does Olivia look like Ava? What do you think?

Snickerdoodle Sandwiches

I meant to share this recipe for Snickerdoodle Sandwiches–I made these at my mom’s a couple of weeks ago, and they were wonderful. It’s risky having an open jar of marshmallow fluff around, but it’s worth it.

Olivia Fix

And, also, this weeks marks two important dates–my mom and dad’s birthdays. Dad’s was yesterday; Mom’s is today. Happy birthday!
