Every now and then, I come across something that gives me more pleasure than any material object should.
My pink mittens, for instance, make me absolutely gleeful. Same goes for a glass jar of bubble bath or my pearl-topped ink pen. I can’t really put my finger on what exactly makes something go from functional to favored, but every so often, something just…fits.
This is my new object of desire–a cupcake-shaped trinket box I’ve had my eye on at our local florist for a number of months. When I returned some vases today, I saw that it was one of two left from the set of eight. A sign, right?
Now it’s perched on my windowsill. It’s pretty, but relatively pointless. And yet, I couldn’t be happier.
What’s the latest object of your affection?

I’m wearing a large cameo necklace and ring set that my neighbor (Colin’s adopted grandmother) loaned me. I was going to wear it with my suit to a career fair last week, but ended up choosing another shirt/jewelry combination. So I’m wearing it today for no reason, a lovely carved white bust with pink background, set in gold. Pretty things are fun 🙂

I have a very cooled wheeled duffel bag that everyone openly envies. When I flew back from Europe last week, it didn’t make our flight but fortunately showed up later that night. It’s orangey-and-grey ripstop stuff, with big wheels. My biggest fear is someone will steal it for the bag itself, not the contents! I got it at Backwoods, a first-rate outdoor adventure store in Omaha.

My latest affection is not an object so much as a genre of them… I am currently in love with office supplies (I think this is directly correlated to the fact that we’re cleaning and rearranging Josh’s office).

Laura – you have always been attracted to office supplies – ever since you were little! Too bad you didn’t choose to go into your father’s business – you could have surrounded yourself in such items on a daily basis. My object of endless affection is my sewing machine – which I have been literally attached to for weeks! Also – as I have referred to in earlier posts – I am attached to my Grandma Ruth’s flour sifter – still, even though I have defiled it by baking it in the oven with confectioners sugar in it. And, my Grandmother’s embroidered tea towels, which I covet – I still have about a dozen unused ones, which I will use, only when the other ones are in literal shreds.
