Sleep is for the weak

I’m really trying to be less judgmental, so I’m just going to simply post a link to this article without any additional comment.

But, if I were to comment, it would be along the lines of “Really? You can’t get up with your OWN CHILD in the middle of the night?” I might also be tempted to add that as a working mom, there’s a part of me that enjoys that time (or at least feels like I should).

And, what I really want to know is, how do you get around the guilt? I feel guilty if Bryan gets up with Olivia.

I just cannot fathom this. Sleep deprivation makes you do strange things, I guess.

Again, though, not passing judgment. To each their own.

Whatever.

Here comes the bride, 20 years early

Ava was admiring my wedding dress and “hat” in our wedding photos last weekend. Since my veil (which my grandma made) is still hanging in my closet, I let her try it on. She was thrilled, though insisted that she needed flowers, too.

“Has anyone seen Olivia?”

Pesto, again

I made another batch of pesto this weekend. This bunch of basil–which is about 10 percent of what’s in the garden–made about four cups.

Heat wave

Temperatures were in the high 90s yesterday, and it’s already 90 here this morning. The forecast high is 101 for today. The nice thing about all this heat is that if you fill a wading pool at noon, it’s warmer than a bath by 4 p.m.

Sunday morning outing

We took the girls to the zoo bright and early on Sunday morning. We were hoping to avoid the heat, so we arrived just as it opened at 9 a.m. We were one of just a handful of families there, and we even got to see the zookeepers feeding the eagles and the bears.

“Nemo?”

This bird whistled at everyone that walked by.

If I had a farm, I’d have a fleet of these geese. A fleet? Or a flock?

Trying to keep cool…

We ended the trip with a train ride around the neighboring park.

German Apple Pancake

There’s a gorgeous German Apple Pancake on the cover of this month’s Cooking Light. It’s an interesting recipe–you start by coating the bottom and sides of a cast iron skillet with sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Then, you arrange apple slices in the pan and cook over medium heat for eight minutes.

The batter (which you gently pour over the apple arrangement) puffs as you bake it, as you can see in this foggy oven photo.

The end result doesn’t look much like the cover shot, but it was still delicious!

Farmers’ Market

We took the girls to the farmers’ market Saturday morning. Ava brought her baby (and her travel mug of juice) so she could pretend she was a grown up, a game she continued throughout the day.

As a side note, I shot these photos, wrote this post and published it all from my phone. Pretty handy!

Oh, and Gramma–I know you’re always wanting to see more photos of me on the blog. That’s my shadow on the bottom of the last shot!

Ava Fix

Overheard

Bry: Exactly how many text messages are you sending to Liana? Why don’t you just call her?

Bec (lying, and also, typing): I’m not sending that many.

Bry: You only have 1,500 a month.

Bec (still typing): That’s like 50 a day. I think I’ll be okay. And, aren’t you impressed with my mathematical abilities, by the way?

Bry: Yeah, 50 a day at 15 cents each. Text messaging is such a rip off.

Bec: Someday it will be free.

Bry: It’s free now. It’s called email.
