Bouncing back

Remember the shriveled shrub on my front porch?

It has really recovered nicely!

We’ve watered it a bit more, but other than that, not much has changed. It even flourished through a few days of 100 temperatures. It’s only been in the 80s the last few days, which helps, too, I’m sure.

I’m glad I didn’t rip them out and attempt to return them. They are so pretty–especially up close.

I know we have about three months of summer yet, but I’m really hoping temperatures will continue to stay low. We have had an absolutely gorgeous spring and summer. Everything is so green–the grass is still alive, which hasn’t been the case this time the last two years.

Fun with sidewalk chalk

Bryan and Ava spent a fair amount of time decorating the front step this weekend. Ava had more on her skin than on the sidewalk, though.

These little footprints were cute enough not to sweep up immediately. I use that excuse a lot when it comes to cleaning, but this time it was true!

Spotted…

A fledgling Carolina Wren perched on the deck, with her mom nearby.

We’ve had a pair of Carolina Wrens since we moved in here a couple of years ago. It’s nice to see they’ve added to their family!

Garden dinner

Here’s the first melon from our garden. It was small, but sweet.

When I set the table for dinner tonight, I was surprised to realize how much of it was from our garden–the pesto, the tomatoes, the cantaloupe and the herbs.

We haven’t had any large tomatoes yet, but we’re planning BLTs (like Laura, with avocado) using tomatoes from my friend Dawn’s garden.

Olivia’s too little for fresh tomatoes (I think the acidity makes them allergenic or something like that), but the kid loves pesto.

Overheard

Ava, to the guests of a very impromptu party at our house after work on Friday night: “Do you know where my mom put the dirty dishes? In the oven!”

Swimming in the Rain

The girls were invited to a friend’s birthday party today. Temperature were only in the high 60s and it poured the entire time.

Fortunately, things like that don’t bother kids!

First bites

As part of my ongoing experiement to see if there’s anything Olivia won’t eat, I gave her goat cheese.

She liked it.

Ava’s Entourage

The crew makes another appearance. They follow her everywhere!

Olivia Fix

Here’s a vintage shot of Baby O, complete with upside down pacifier. She’s outgrown the car seat, but the pacifier? Not a chance.

And another thing…

Clearly I’ve failed on the whole “not passing judgment” thing, so I might as well just add a bit more.

It’s things like this that gives working moms a bad rap. I mean, I’m (obviously) all for involving professional caregivers in the upbringing of my children. I think they’re better for it, in fact.

But, there are those who argue that I’m letting someone else raise my children while I work (or blog, as the case may be this morning). When you work, you have to be willing to FULLY devote yourself once you get home. Hobbies fly out the window. “Me” time is the occasional shower you have to yourself.

If work makes you (or your partner) too tired to get up with your INFANT at night, then really, you need to reevaluate your priorities. If you don’t, I think–in all honesty–you deserve the wrath coming from the other side in the “Mommy Wars.”

Some moms work outside of the home, some don’t. I don’t really care–do what suits you and your family. But please be a responsible, loving parent and devote some time your kids when you are at home.

Whew. Passing judgment is so cathartic. Why did I decide to cut back?
