Ava, to the guests of a very impromptu party at our house after work on Friday night: “Do you know where my mom put the dirty dishes? In the oven!”

Oh, Ava! What you have yet to learn about hostessing… 🙂

In all fairness, she did follow up by saying that it was a secret.

We entertained at our old house on Lafayette years ago – after Stan and Kathy got married. We had no dishwasher, and had not done dishes for days – needless to say, the small kitchen was full of dirty dishes piled up everywhere. We managed to find a clean skillet and make scrambled eggs – at 3AM – and made an even bigger mess. I will never know what the people – many of them strangers to us – would say after the fact. Probably that we were real slobs! Why we did that, probably because we had had too much to drink as well! But, it was fun.

PS – you just have to love the plain honesty of kids!

Dishes in the oven? What a great idea! I’ll have to try that the next time we have unexpected company…

Bec has pulled this stunt before, and then started the oven the next day forgetting that there were plastic spatulas etc in there.

Hmmm…reminds me of a time when Ava dropped a bowl of dry Cheerios on the living room floor, ran to get the broom, and then promptly swept them under the couch.

Nicky, you can fit A LOT of dishes in there.

Karyl, that’s an awesome story. I’ve never heard that before! I wish I had been around (and of age) for parties the house on Lafayette. Sounds like it was quite the destination!

Becca, I have hid dishes in the oven and then forgot. One time I started a fire b/c I had but a big plastic strainer in there. What a mess. I don’t do that anymore.

I have to confess – I put a baking pan with my flour sifter in the oven and forgot about it – and days later, I started the oven. The flour sifter had confectioners sugar in it – and needless to say – I figured it out pretty fast when something started smelling pretty bad. The flour sifter was browned – I cleaned it up as best I could – and I still use it. The sad thing is that it belonged to my Grandma Ruth, and then my Mom. I have a sentimental attachment to it, so I will not dispose of it. I think of them every time I use it – which, since I don’t bake that much, is not that often. But I am still upset with myself that I damaged it!

I didn’t mean to say that I don’t think of my Mom and Grandma Ruth often – I just meant that I don’t bake often!
