First bites

Since starting cereal a few weeks ago, Olivia has tried avocados, sweet potatoes and now, green beans. She was pretty skeptical after the first bite, but warmed to them quickly.

As I did with Ava, I’m making Olivia’s baby food. The first time around, I reasoned that it was easy to do, not to mention less expensive than jarred foods. Now, I’m not so sure about either of those things, but I’m committing to it anyway. For now.

It is a relatively simple process. Steam:

Process:

Freeze:

Eventually, we’ll just run whatever we’re eating through the food mill for Olivia. For now, though, we’re introducing new foods one at a time about a week apart, so it’s nice to have a few frozen options on hand.

Could she be any cuter??? For what it is worth – the trouble you go to is so much worth the effort – especially when you compare it to jarred Gerber baby food – which is why, I swear, Jason and Jessica have so many food issues. I started pureeing our food with Bryan and Laura – Bryan is like Mikey – he likes everything. Laura used to before she got weird.

Olivia is growing up so fast. (And your nails look pretty.)

When does “eventually” happen? Colin is 8 months old and we’re still introducing things one at a time, but he’s nowhere near introduced to everything. (We generally forget how long it’s been since the last new food, and then try to figure out something appropriate for his next food.) If you remember, let me know when you started pureeing table food for Ava.

    Nicky,

We started to cut down the time between new foods to about 3 days when she was eight months old. We got a lot new foods in rather quickly that way, but I still felt like I’d be able to identify the culprit if she had a reaction.

On Thanksgiving, I gave her what we were eating for dinner, whether she’d had it before or not. (She would have been about 9 months old at that point.)

From there, we really didn’t worry about introducing new things one at a time. I made menus before shopping each week, and did I keep those as kind of a record. We never had any trouble, fortunately!

I think we did wait until she was a year old to give her citrus, and maybe strawberries, though. I inadvertently introduced nuts at about 11 months (I’d forgotten about the walnuts in pesto), but we did wait on peanuts until she was two. Other than that, nothing was off limits.

That kid will still eat almost anything!

Overheard during last night’s telephone conversation with Rebecca:

Ava: “I want too many olives.”

(And she probably likes them stuffed with garlic or onion like Aunt Katie.)

Also overheard during her third birthday party:

    Ava: “I want gin!”

Apparently her diverse cravings are not confined to food 🙂 I should also say that Rebecca, good mother that she is, said no despite the fact that a tantrum was about to erupt.

She’ll even eat the ones stuffed with blue cheese!
